Hey bandees!!
This might be my last post for this blog.I did not regret being a leader as I know I had do my best and 100% efforts for this band. Even though I have step down and gave my 100% for all of you, I really want to see all of you to improve and excel. I do not want to see my efforts go to waste. I have being with this band for 4 years and I have really learnt a lot of things from you guys.
From Sec1, I was a blur guy who did not know anything about music and band.In the process, I have learnt how to play a Bb clarinet and for 2009 SYF, I was playing Eb Alto Clarinet and Bass Clarinet. The pieces were Overture No.1 for Wind Band and Hill Songs. I love these pieces!
After the seniors step down, I have being assigned to be a ASL of Clarinet and Ass Head QM. In the starting, I did not know anything. I was confused about a lot of things but my seniors had taught me well. I understand how to repair, maintain, observe the instruments and many stuffs. For ASL, I did not do my best as I was still learning. But slowly, I help MingMing, my SL.
When I was Sec3, I was worried that my seniors were stepping down and we Sec3s cannot lead the band. But with the guiding of the teachers,leaders and seniors, I was able to lead the band. I was happy when I was told that I had become a Drum Major of the band. I was happy as I know I can lead all of you and teach you valuable things.
Sec4 was the toughest year for me as there are SYF 2011 and 'O' level. I was able to teach all of you how to march with your instruments which I had learnt from NCO course for Drum Majors and Band Majors. I had gone to OBS course too and learn more things like how to be a real leader. During the preparation for SYF, we had many problems as many of you are not ready for SYF and very indiscipline. To tell you the truth, I was struggling. But I had finally woke all of you up the day before SYF. (Although it was too late) But I do not blame all of you.
Many drum and band majors who are friends of mine also said that it is the process and results does not matter. So,the committee list will be announced after band resumes. My advise is please do not complain for whatever position you have being assigned to. Learn new skills and do the best for this band. Listen to your teachers, instructors, leaders and seniors. I do not want to hear any complaint from anyone. I will be very disappointed as I am preparing for 'O's and I have to worry for you guys. OKAY? Promise me.

For the sec4s and sec5s, you will be auditioned by Ms Tan.
Be reminded that your results will not tell immediately and you will know it when Ms Tan finalise it. The audition will be based on the SYF criteria that I had posted few months ago. You need to refer to it. Your passing mark is 60% not 50% so please do your best. When you meet your examiner, listen to what your examiner's instructions so that nothing will go wrong.
For those who like to have a re-test for your audition, please inform your examiner. You will briefly know your own standards so if you want, please inform him/her. You will know your venue for your audition when it is your turn for audition.

*For examiners, I want to meet all of you at 2.30p.m. You have to skip your lunch as we do not have time. Please eat a full meal during recess.

Hey guys,

How's japan trip? I guess all of you have lot of fun...Well, I did. Especially for the exchange programme with Sakuragi Junior High School and Atsugi High School. I really hope that those of you who went to Japan can sit down and reflect what you had learnt all this 5days. Let me tell you that if you really sit down quietly alone and think about it, you really have already learn something. This is what the instructor at OBS Camp taught me during my camp. All of the different school leaders from CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls' School, Serangoon Garden Secondary School and others really sit down and think through and they all wrote amazing reflections not many people would think about.

All of you are musicians and you all should be mature enough to do what is right and what is wrong even if you do not want to be a musician in the future. For me, by just listening to the bass clarinet players playing, I had learnt several things like better tone, good rhythm and many other good and positive learning skills. See...If I can do it, why can't you? Nothing is impossible in the world. It is not that you cannot do it but you do not want to try it.

I want to see lot of improvement from all of you and teach the one who did not go for the trip to react,respond and other stuffs related to music and discipline. SYF is just 4 months away and our basic skills are still not there. More importantly, our SYF video have not done at all and most of the sec1s and 2s do not have the basics foot drills skills. I'm going to be very particular and serious during 27 and 28 Dec as I do not have many times for all of you to practice anymore as school is reopening.

Some things need to be reminded(Note that Sec1 are Sec2 and so on):

Sec2s: You are a senior in the band now and joining the committee for most of you very soon after the SYF and you need to be acting like a senior. NO MORE WHINING AND ACTING LIKE A BABY...Honestly, it looks ridiculous....

Sec3s: You are stepping up to be leaders soon too regardless of being Section Leaders or others. The Sec4s are passing down their knowledge and skills to you all so that you can learn and lead the band until you step down. Like what our former Drum Major, Gordon taught me, when you come back to band after you had graduated, would you want to see your band members running about, acting immature and the standard that you had keep it up and see it regressed? Most importantly, do not talk back to the sec4s. During the trip, when we seniors speak to you, you talk back. For example, when I teach you how to improve your tone, I told you that long tone is the only way and do not feel like slacking when doing that, you should not say that you did not feel that way..I'm just telling you what you should not do and not that you are doing it. And do not act that you know more stuffs than your seniors as it is quite disrespectful. Just suggest what your seniors can do and not speaking in a harsh tone.

Sec4s: We are finally the Super Seniors in school. This four months are the last time we can lead and improve our band members before we step down for our national examination. So cherish it or you will really regret it when you miss the band. We are the last batch who was taught by Mr Wong and Ms Tan and you all should know how SYF is very important and serious. Remember the audition for SYF? It is very serious and tough for most of us and many of us failed the audition but we retry and try again until we can get into the competition. More serious case, THIS IS OUR LAST SYF!!!! So do your best and get at least a Silver or Gold for our Kent Ridge Symphonic Band!!!!

Sec5s: Congratulation to all of you passing to Sec5s!!!! Please do your best in teaching Sec1s,2s,3s and 4s how our band was like before and improve to a gold band standard!!! You can see you have a VERY, VERY role to do. And same as the things I told the Sec4s, it is really your last SYF for your whole life! CHERISH IT!

Sorry for all the naggy speech but I was too engrossed saying to all of you. Just remember that, NEW YEAR, NEW AND GOOD ATTITUDE! And please wake up!! SYF!!!! For those who went to japan, remember that you have a very important role to do. And remember about the PowerPoint!

For those who are going for the japan trip, here are the most important things you are reminded to bring:

Passport ( For those who have not give yours)
Luggage ( Maximum 20kg)
Instruments, Mouthpieces or Drumsticks (Especially for the one who did not make it for 9 Dec 10 briefing )
Hand-carry bags
Cameras (Optional,if you have one)

Just some reminders, please wear your NEW BAND TEE to the airport and report at TERMINAL 1 by 2.30a.m .Also, Remember to GIVE A MORNING CALL TO YOUR BUDDIES!!!!

Things to pack and prepare:
1. All the travel documents especially passport
2. Money, about Minimum $200
Maximum $300
3. Handbook and Stationery
4. Special medication (if any) and doctor's letter (if necessary)
5. Travel medication ( Travel sinkness pills, charcoal pills, parecetamol, inhaler, anti-itch cream, insect repellent and etc.)
6. Souvenirs/cards for your buddy/friends
7. Hand-carry bag ( backpack to carry wattle bottle, camera and daily essentials )

Clothing and Toiletries
1. School PE T-shirt
2. Underwear ( at least 8pcs, can also buy disposables)
3. 4 T-shirt/shirt (strongly recommended and preferably long-sleeved)
4. Thick- Sweater (preferably water-proof on the outside)
5. Long pants/jeans (1-2)
6. Thick socks (6-7 pairs) and track shoes
7. Toiletries and bath towel
8. Moisturises/Vaseline petroleum jelly for skin and lips (compulsory as skin and lips may crack in cold and dry weather)
9. Thermometer
10. Ziplock/plastics bags to store soiled clothing

How's the band camp? Although it was not expected that the Thai conductor would come to teach us, it was a good experience. I have realised many improvements from different sections.... It is a good start... SYF is coming very soon and many other school bands are working very,very hard!!! Of course,many bands are playing Memories of Friendship so it will be very competitive....I will show what's the judging criteria for SYF Central Judging..

JUDGING CRITERIA
4.1 The judging criteria are as follows:

4.2 The decision of the panel of adjudicators is final and no appeal will be entertained.
5. AWARDS
5.1 The Central Judging provides the opportunity for school concert bands to benchmark their performance standards. There is no predetermined number of gold, silver or bronze awards. Participating schools will be awarded certificates based on their performances as follows:
-Gold 80% and above
-Silver 70% to 79%
-Bronze 60% to 69%
-Certificate of Participation 59% and below
5.2 To recognise the outstanding achievement of concert band that have attained high performance standards, that obtain a final mark of 85% or more will receive the Gold award (with Honours).

This is the judging criteria...I really wish all of you will work very hard to get what our band wish to achieve...I will give more information about the SYF Central Judging some other time.

Hey bandeess!!!

Please work hard in your end year examination. Hahah...

Okay, today is the last day of band practice as all of us are stepping down for the end of year exam. I really wish that all of you will spend time practicing your basics techniques and the pieces that Ms Tan asked us to practice as there will be a AUDITION after the exams!!! Those who fail their audience, you will take the audience over and over again until you pass. So do it once and you do not need to do again. =D

Sec1s : I have told all of you already...Most of the other schools' secondary 1 are already able to play the instruments properly without much simple mistakes and they are joining their seniors in playing pieces as well!!! So I need all of you to put in more efforts in playing your instruments better.

Sec2s: This year is your streaming year and I wish all of you will do your best in your exams and make the band feel proud of all of you :) Not only that, all of you are going to be sec3s soon and I wish all of you can act like a leader and lead your juniors to a higher level. Also, learn from some of your sec3s and 4s that are good in leadership and learn the good points.

Sec3s: I really have a very high expectation on you all as most of you experienced a good leadership from your ex-seniors. I wish all of you can remember how you should respect your leaders and lead the band properly. Many of you keep complaining that the band is not discipline. But can you think? If you aren't the one who influenced them, will them be like this?
For example, SLs and ASLs, sit properly when you are in the band. By doing this, you are showing your best image to your fellow members and they will respect you.This is good for the seniors as when you sit straight, the sec1s will think that you have the ability to teach. When the conductor is not around, take an effort to tune your members' instruments ( But with the leaders permission). ALSO, do not baby-fed your juniors anymore!!! They are becoming seniors very soon and you need to let them to be independent.

Okay, I will meet all of you after E.Y.E. Do your best in learning,revising and studying. Not only that, drink more water and eat more fruits as it can prevent you from getting sick for your exams. I wish all of you GOOD LUCK for your exams!!

This is also my first post on the band blog. Like what ziliang said, congrats to all of the people who got the roles in the band and etc... My posts will not be very long unless I am really angry or i have something to say. But that would be super rare, so don't worry, you wont be able to fall asleep while reading. I admit that band is pretty boring sometimes and really wants to make you skip practice, but what really counts is the fun times!My expectations are simple:

Hey Band-ees!!

First, this is my First official post as a Drum Major. I know the band blog is very dead....Seriously...Because everybody is busy studying and practicing(or playing).

Second, I would like to congratulate all the new commitee members especially the sec1 and 2 joining our commitee :) As a commitee, I need to tell all of you that it is not a position that you can keep dusts. Our ex- top 3 leaders and the teachers had chosen you to be whatever post you are in ,is because they trust that you can do a good job to improve the band. I'm happy and excited in working with all of you and I wish you can spend time and effort to improve your band.

Third, this is for all the band members. I will be posting the rules and regulations very soon. I found out that one of the reasons cause in bad discipline problems is many of you do not know what is required in the band. I expect everybody to follow it because many of you do not want to get punishment from any of the teachers and leaders ,right?

OKAY, I will stop here first. I do not want to bore all of you :)
Oh ya, can everybody help to ask your band members to tag the tagboard as I do not want the blog to be dead. If you have questions to ask, you can ask. But remember, no nonsense are allow!

ACJC CONCERT BAND is proud to present MUSE 2010.

They will be performing familiar tunes like Overture 1812 by Tchaikovshy,Spartacus by Jan Van der Roost and many more! These works include pieces that they will be performing at the Los Angeles International Music Festival!

Gordon, your ex-senior/DM will be performing on that day, so please do go and support your senior!! I encourage all of you especially the Secondary Ones to come as it is during the holidays and by attending concerts will help you improve in various ways for example your listening skills, giving you experiences on how a concert is like and etc.

Hey Band!
Monday was the day where i ended off my wonderful music journey with all of you.
Even though i didn't show it or say, i must tell you now that i can't bare to end it.

I have lots of things to say, so please bear with it!

I would like to thank all of you on behalf of all the leaders and seniors for giving us such a unforgettable experience, and for the friendships, smiles and respect and everything that you all have given us.
Those bitter and sweet times that we have gone through together, as a band, and most importantly, as friends.

I must say that, from the day where i became your DM from year 2009 to 2010, things did not go well to what i have expected.. change of instructors, and teachers (blah blah and blah..)
At the beginning, i almost wanted to give up.
But, do you know the reason why i continued to struggle through?
It was YOU. The Band that gave me this strength to carry on.

Sometimes, i don't see it. But i feel it.. That all of you wants to carry on this journey with me and improve.Although at times, you make me get angry,and cry because all of you don't follow to our instructions, giving us pressure and so on..

But.. i have to say.. I REALLY REALLY LOVE ALL OF YOU!

I felt that, this journey with all of you was a really exciting and challenging one that i will never ever forget!
As a DM, i feel the sense of accomplishment every time i see all of you improving slowly. This is what makes me want to continue.

To all those people that comes for band, but always at the back saying that you hate band.
I don't blame you for it. I used to hate band, and yes i still hate band at times due to the long hours, punishments, scoldings we get every time. But I know that, you still care.

Realise why i have never given up on juniors, members who are always so stubborn, disrespectful to seniors, who skips band, and playful?
-To me, patience is the key to success.
Everyone is unique, and they need your care and concern because they are humans.
We have emotions.
I would want to inspire the current seniors with my words. Please remember.

''Who knows, you may discover the potential in you''
I just want to say that, give in your best for whatever you do.

A teacher told me this, A man looked at this $50mil house and said, ''i will never be able to buy it'' 10 years later, he bought a $30mil house instead.
Do you think he have succeeded?
My answer is, No.

If all of you have this thinking of aiming higher than what you will expect, I am sure you all can achieve a better standard than what we are now, and work for it no matter how hard or how many times you try.
It is just like how Thomas Elva Edison who tried many times, and invented the light bulb.
I want the band to continue to strive for more, bond together as a family, and make wonderful music to touch people's heart =)

Even though the next batch of top 3 leaders and committees have not been chosen yet.
I would like to say to all the TIP(Training in progress) people, do your best to lead the band, be confident, don't get nervous and think before you do anything.
Make the mistakes, learn and change.
Do what you think is the best for the band.
Remember, do not only think about what you need, what they should do, but also what both of you need in common.
Please take good care of them and let them continue to enjoy this music journey.
Do what is best for the band, and build up a higher standard.

Members! Please try to work well with your new I/Cs and give them feedback whenever you think they need for their performance. Forgive them for their mistakes and give them time to improve.

Continue to be the best Performing Arts group, and the most hardworking one like what Mrs Tan said for speech day in the school, and touch others with your music!

Look back at the 10th anniversary performance.
All of you did great, and i am really very proud of all of you.
Many think that we are just a bronze band, and we can't do much.
But we did it, with the loud applause we have got from the audience for our performance.
Positive comments from many parents and teachers!
Even the ex-seniors said that all of you improved tremendously compared to the last time they heard you.
Continue this effort, do KR proud and go beyond frontiers!
Do more than what a bronze band can do!
Remember, Awards does not matter!!
Just do your best in everything, and never give up!

Remember, to me

You will always be the best band that i will never forget despite all those troubles and unhappy moments we have gone through.
Have Faith and believe =)

Don't forget all the experience, fun and what we have learn together as a band, and what all your seniors have taught you about. They may not have said much, but continue to set a good example to your juniors! =)

An important update for all of you.
Sorry for informing all of you late, due to some communication problems and blah blah..

All members performing for KR 10th year anniversary, i would need you to bring the following items tomorrow (If you could get them) and Friday (MUST!).

1.White long sleeves shirt ( Big enough to tuck in!)
2.Black Court Shoes for Girls and Black Shoes for Guys.
3.Stockings for girls, Black socks for guys.
4. Long pants for the guys (Including the sec2s!), and skirts for the girls.

SLs, after you have seen this, please pass the message to all your members, if you are not being informed yet, or did not receive the message i have sent out.

Sec4s, this is our last concert, so let's do our best and for the last time before we step down alright! :D
Remember, Monday 12th April is our last practice :(

Let me remind all of you that the conducting workshop will be held in our school for the first time, and many many other band members from different schools will be coming to our school for this 3 day conducting workshop.
All of you will be playing for them as they conduct.

Your behavior will show everything about yourself, and if you do not want KRSB reputation to be known as a negative one..
Please Please Please know what is right and wrong and behave yourselves and be in your best that day okay! Section Leaders, please know what to do. I trust in all of you.

As usual, just a reminder.
If you cannot make it for the practice, please inform your SLs or me.
If a need, tell the teachers in-charge so that we are being informed. Thanks!
Produce a MC if you are sick, or your passport if you are going overseas.

I have many to remind you all about, and please make this the last time.

1. Your behavior for last few practices haven't been good, and i am really very upset.

I hope that the punishments that i have given all of you will help you reflect on what you all did.
If this continues on, the punishment that i give next time will not be as lenient as before okay.
I say it, and i mean it even though as One Band One Sound, i do punishments with all of you every time. Most important is that you realise your mistakes.

2. Another thing is please always do remember to sign out and in everytime you borrow your instrument back. (Especially the SEC1s)

After you borrowed valve oils or etc. from the QMs, please return it to the QM after every practice. I realised that the QMs haven't been doing their jobs, and i am really very unhappy about it (You should know), members do your best by returning it to them instead of having them to remind you.

3. Late for band practice.

From next practice onwards, those who are late for band practices.
More than 3mins and so..
You will need to pay 10cents + 1 push up for every minute.
(Eg. Late for 8mins = 50cents + 5 push ups)
The money will not go into my pocket, but the band fund.
-If you know that you don't have $ and don't wish to pay, then please do not be late!
-If you think you are rich and wants to show off your stamina, then go ahead and be late for band.

For this new punishment, if anyone of you have any comments/feedbacks about it or any other new suggestions, please approach me personally. I hope to carry on this culture in the band even after i leave the band.

To be able to reach school and go for band practices punctually or early means you have self-discipline. I do all this, is to train all of you!

4. BAND FUND
Super late.
All of you have not been paying band fund for 3months!!!
Please remind each other to pay for the band fund $4 by next monday!
Pass it to your Section Leaders.

5. Band T-Shirt
Our band really really need a new Band T-shirt!
Sec2s still don't have one even until now!
Anybody interested please just do a sketch and suggest it to Mr Pek your idea!

Lastly!! Bring your personal -Superior Foundation Book- back for band.

Hi Band-ies!

I know.. It has been so long since i updated the band blog.
Hope all of you are currently studying hard for your Common Tests 1! :D
Did you people enjoy the CNY/Valentine/Sec 1 welcome party? Hope you guys did!
Have to Thank Yingyi and Shermine for preparing the Lo Hei.
The rest for planning games and bringing the CNY goodies.

I will be updating our upcoming events again.

Our March Concert will be canceled, and pushed to a later date due to some reasons.
Our next performance will be on the 9th of April 2010, KRSS 10th Year Anniversary..
Alumni are are all welcome to come back..
I will be updating on more information and keep you all informed. :)

Sec1s have just joined us last week.
I hope that all the seniors will welcome them in and treat them well.
Let them know more about the band, and talk to them more often!
Let them feel comfortable in the KRSB family.
Sec4s will be stepping down real soon, sec2s and 3s please really do your part.
Even though just as a normal member, you should not ever think that you don't have a part to play in the band and leave all the jobs to the leaders.

Alright BAND-IES!

I must say, i won't be updating this blog any often, maybe only for upcoming concerts that i would recommend you guys to go. Please try to understand..
But still.. Do come back and check.

I have already given u people much freedom of speech, though i have already said this umpteen of times that the Tagboard is THERE only for you to make clarifications and doubts.

This blog is meant to keep you updated about certain upcoming events, information and reminders that we leaders want to share with you all.

Any committee members who might think u have really really interesting things to share with the band through this blog, u can come and look for me for the password.

Our next performance is on Friday which is the CCA Fair. It is an EXTREMELY important day for us.. Even though its not a big concert or whatsoever..

But our priority this year is to attract as many sec1s as possible to join our BAND!!
Please encourage any sec1s that u know in the school to join band, so lets do our best for that day.After that, we will have our Chinese New Year Performance.. and.. Lots more coming up..

Sec2s and 3s, i know it is time u all grow up and take up responsibilities, become a leader, not a follower.. Lead the juniors, do your part in band and show your section members. Show me your potential since i have already put in so much trust in all of you.

I have to say, i was kind of disappointed when i heard my ex co member telling the conductor that u did not play or even try to play because '' I can't play this piece''

Never ever say, ''I can't play..''.
But you must say, ''I will try my best, practice and conquer this piece of music!!''
If there's a will, there's a way!

Even if you don't like that piece, tell yourself you love it!

The only thing i could do to help, is to tell you what u should do.
The rest is up to you, whether u believe me or not..
You all should know that, i won't be there forever to nag at you all, to tell you what to do, and nag at you..
Your seniors won't be there forever for you to rely on, u yourself must be independent.

SLs, please do your job and call up all your MIA members to come back for band! Especially sec4s, that is the only thing u could at least do, to save your section before you step down!!!!
Dont let me repeat this PLEASE!!! At least show me some improvement in your section!!!

Hi BAND!

Hope you all enjoyed the Band Day Camp and had fun..
Learned something from the Master Class instructors, Mr Zuan (For Brasses) and Mr Simon Foo ( For Woodwinds).
I am quite satisfied with your ensemble performance,especially Percussion Section for putting in effort even though it is not really well done.
Congrats Saxophones for the Duet play.

I know all of you can do better than that!

Please go home and write down on a piece of paper what u all have learned and place it in your file, always remember it!

One more VERY IMPORTANT thing for you all to remember..
Always always have a PENCIL in your pocket when u come for Band Practices!!
If not i will have you all to pay $1 to buy a pencil from the treasurer!

Some Details on your Band Camp

21st December09 - 8am to 5pm
22nd December09 - 8am to 8pm
(All of you must fall in by 7.45am)

For your Band Camp on the 21st.
All members are to wear your PE Shirt + KRSS Shorts
For 22nd, Sec 2s and 3s will wear your Band T-Shirts, while the Sec1s please wear your
Sec1 orientation Camp T-shirt.

Things to Bring:
-WaterBottle (at least 500ml)
-Pencil and Notebook

There will be an upcoming concert which Mr Chiang and I would want the whole band to go for.

I am here updating you on our Band Outing to Sentosa on the 3rd Dec, Thursday :)

Venue: Meet at Clementi Bus Interchange
Time: 11am Sharp
What to bring: At least $10 or more,Water Bottle (At least 500ml), Every section to bring some snacks to share, (eg. Chips, biscuits, sandwiches, etc..)
(Optional) Sun block Lotion, Cap, extra sets of clothes (In case we throw u in the water!)

We will be meeting each other at clementi bus interchange and will be taking the monorail at Vivo City to Sentosa.
Those who wants to meet us at Vivo City, pls sms Isabel.
Someone could volunteer to bring frisbee or volley ball.

Hi people!!

Just a reminder for all of you.
There will be a open house for our school on 28Nov Saturday (9am to 3pm).
All of you are expected to memorize the ensemble scores by heart as you will be playing them on the day itself. Make sure u entertain them with your performance!

Those people who will be overseas on that day, or couldn't make it due to some reasons, please inform Mr kenneth pek by next week.

Also,all of you are reminded to pay $5 for the Band camp and $2 for the Band fund to Hao Shi latest by next Monday.

Anyway, i hope that you guys learned a lot of new skills during the tutorials we had on this few practice, especially on the techniques and how to make full use of your sectionals time to practice. Make sure you do whatever the tutors had u to practice on for every section.

Brasses are encouraged to borrow home your mouthpiece every practice and make sure u buzz for at least 15mins every day as the tutors have said. It will really help you improve on your tone and playing. Trust me!!

Hi band..

We will be stepping down for EYE soon uhh.. There are some things that i really need to say before that.
Hope it'll be a something for u guys.. Might be long..

Hmm.. after all this while in band.
I realised that most of you have no enthusiasm in band at all. Attendance are really becoming worse.. Most of you come for band just for CCA points. I know that way of thinking..
When i was in sec 1 .. I wasn't very interested back then.. At that time, going for band practice was a tiring chore for me as hours were really long and we had to practice in the long hours of sectionals.. It was horrible as i have to bear with the tiring training from my seniors back then..
I have got no interest in my instrument at all and didn't practise hard.. Band practices are just so boring & having to receive punishments, drills & scoldings. But after a time, i slowly went in and made myself to really understand the band and what the leaders & seniors were actually doing.. Through all these experiences, i realise i learned a lot. In having self-discipline and confidence to stand up.

I started to realise that band was actually a really fun place where many will sit together and play together just like a community when i was in sec2.. Back then.. Practices had became an event that i look forward to every time. My passion in music & band grew & that was when I was starting to be afraid, in not being able to play well like my senior then, that made me aimed to practise hard.. I knew many were just like me before. That will be your beginning..

As i go up to sec 3, I looked back at the challenges i've faced. After Mr Wong & Ms Tan gave me this chance as your current DM, everything changed, that includes my life.. I faced in many problems in the beginning, gone through with many difficulties. I became so ambitious, & i struggled through, wanting to reach out for a higher standard by myself, but that was a serious mistake that i had made. Success comes from step by step and with the help from the members and being united as one band one sound, but not at all once alone. In stepping up, there were many mistakes that i had made, but i believe everybody should be given chances to continue to improve and change for the better. Both of them were the one who changed me, and taught me those important values that should be kept in and to face all the problems. :)
That was my story, so how about you?

In SYF'09, that was the moment that i will never ever forget. Remember? All that we've gone through? HFMD, cancelling of pratices, MCs , lack of players and we nearly weren't able to take part in SYF. But thanks to the leaders, conductors and teachers, we made it through right? Just look back.. We made it, with perseverance. We nearly gave up back then..
But we showed our unity and perseverance through those torturing days.
But how about for now?

I really see that the section leaders and committees aren't putting in efforts at all that really disappoints me. Not even the seniors are encouraging your juniors to come back for practices.

One determined person can make wonders, and that a group of determined people can make a significant difference.
So why not?

I hope that after reading this, it'll really make u realise something and reflect..
In the mean time! STUDY SMART and STUDY HARD FOR YOUR EXAMINATIONS!!

I'm willing to take in feedbacks from all of you members at all times in improving the band and we leaders and the committee. If you think that something needs to be improved or missing from what u guys wish to have, we leaders will be more than happy to hear from you okay.

Please be reminded that there will be Band practice on Monday 7 september
from 8.45am to 12pm.
For those who are having tutorials, please come after that.
All of you are suppose to turn up and bring your instruments back, because we will be doing maintenance for you instruments..
Remember to do the homework that Ms Tan asked u guys to do..
Go home check on the web on how to maintain your instruments okay..

AND! Those who brought back your instruments

I'm here to inform you guys about the concert that we had mentioned on Monday.

The Philharmonic Winds presents - Spanish Fantasia
It will be on the 6th September 2009
7.30pm at the Esplanade Concert Hall

The price goes as Standard - $50, $35, $25, $20, $15

BUT!! There will be 10% bulk discount(min 10 tickets), 20% bulk discount(min 20 tickets),
50%bulk discount(min 50 tickets)

Also.. The school may be subsiding 60% of the ticket price.
For example that we are buying the $20 ticket of (20 tickets), with 20% discount & 60% of subsidies from the school.
The price will then be $20(actual price)- $4(20% discount)- $12(60% subsidies) = $4
So why not?!! You can go for a concert that cost over $20++ for just $4!

I can bet that it won't be as boring as the last concert.
By attending concerts and listening to the pieces they are playing for will really help to improve your playing..

Anyway, our performance for national day is just 2 days away..
I hope you guys are looking forward to it, especially the sec1s as it is your first performance,
and will be your first experience what band is about. =)

We have missed out 2 practices due to national day and celebrations, and I can see that we are not prepared at all.
Maybe partly because of we leaders, not preparing u guys well.. OR.. Unprepared as

To the committees and SLs, i really hope that the committee meeting was a meaningful one,
and that all of you would bother to go home and reflect, but not only with a proposal.
Because Actions Speaks Louder Than Words. I wish to see improvement, even without the top 3 leaders pushing.
Because, all of you are leaders, and are suppose to be one, but not a follower.

Even though many of you just see band as a CCA, and not part of you once u step out of the band room.
But what i want you all to know that. Band is not just all, but much much more.
Music is something that u can apply to your daily life,and also part of your life.
Discipline and leadership posts that u hold will teach u how to be more responsible, to be more independent,
and plan ahead for everything that u will definitely need to hold for your further life..
Passion is what u need for everything, even in your studies.In order to strive for more and achieve your goals.
Well, u will never know the potential hidden in you yourself.

Hi band!

I guess I shall be the one to keep this blog alive uhh..
I know some of you may be feeling kind of bored as CCAs were suspended, or some people might be happily celebrating about it.. Even though there is no band practices, that does not mean that you can forget all about band. Remember? We still have our Award's Day Performance & National Day performance!

Just want to remind you guys in this period of time.. Please take good care of health and take this period of -No CCAs- to concentrate on your studies as common tests are coming Okay?

After all these that we had gone through.. With many changes..
I want to challenge you guys, to start new and move on to a greater heights no matter what happens from the next band practice onwards.. Take the risk, make a greater change and greater heights. Open up your wings!
I know this band has potential, and can do much better than what we are now! Believe in yourself, have trust in this band. Faith and hope is what we need.

From the past few months, i've seen a great progress from the sec1s and I just want to say that I am really proud of you people. I really want to thank you guys for not giving up, and putting in efforts to do your best in practicing on the songs. It was a right choice having to put the sec1s into the Award's Day performance.

To the seniors, I just want to say that never never ever give up on your juniors. They are new, and i know they may sometimes be naughty or defiant, & curious about everything.. But seniors, please do your job to teach them whatever you know, and everything they need to learn and want to learn.. I was once a Sec 1 too right, and I know how this feeling is like. Never ever stop learning and teaching.
The seniors must always be the one to lead. Everyone will be given chances to every mistake u make, but to learn from the mistake. Never stop trying & never give up.

Hi band!

So long since anyone updated the blog uhh.. Have been hearing lots of stuffs from you guys,and also the sec1s.. I have lots to say to you guys, but i don't think you guys want to hear me nagging right? Here is something i want to share with you people, that might change your mind sets even though it is quite long..
U MUST READ IT! It is something very meaningful, and to people who don't learn music, and may be asking.. why band,why music? You will understand that Music enhances cognitive learning and facilitates growth in many areas of human development, i.e., motivation, social skills, time management, situational awareness, aesthetic appreciation, and etc..

Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.-

Any responsible music educator will emphatically echo this important mantra; it is the keystone theme that serves as the foundation of music teaching, music learning, and music performance. There is no substitute or replacement for music making as it relates to the positive growth and development of the human mind, body, and spirit. Participation in band avails the musician to the infinite journey of creative expression connecting to a language (music) that is understood, communicated, and appreciated by all of mankind around the globe. More importantly, MUSIC IS A PLACE FOR EVERYONE. Rightfully so, the emphasis of most music educators is the teaching-of-music. The young men and women who find their way to our rehearsal rooms are the focus of our daily teaching efforts and energies. The mission is to teach the mastery of musical skills so our students can access quality music and experience the joy of an ever-evolving sense of aesthetic expression. The intrinsic value of this musical blueprint is priceless, and every musician will attest to the immeasurable benefits of making music. The music culture adamantly agrees on the importance of music; it is a fundamental need of life. Granted this philosophical perspective is very convincing, especially to those who have been involved in some aspect of music.

In fact it is inconceivable to musicians that music education is not considered a core subject in every school curriculum, and for EVERY child. Unfortunately this is NOT the case, therefore if we want the students-of-today to become the music-makers of tomorrow; the responsibility of “sharing the good news about the importance of arts education in our schools” must be embraced with a serious commitment accompanied by a diligent follow-through. We no longer can teach only the “interested students;” we must plant the seeds-of-interest and personally escort the students to the gateway of their musical future.

WHO ARE THE STUDENTS WHO STUDY MUSIC?

∑ We know the majority (over 85%) of music literates LEARN music in the school setting, whether through general music classes, choir, orchestra, and/or band. It is apparent if students are not part of the school music program, there is little (if any) chance they will seek to develop their musical skills outside the school setting.

∑ Many traditional recruitment programs do not offer multiple opportunities to “join the band.” Although most music educators are eager-and-willing to accommodate any student who demonstrates an interest in being a part of the ensemble, the bulk of the students come into the program during the “beginner sign-up” event. One out of six possible candidates opts to become involved in band, orchestra, or choir. Shouldn’t we ask ourselves, “What about the other five?”

∑ Over half of the students who enroll in a beginning music program during the middle school (junior high) years do not participate during their high school careers. For various reasons, they opt to drop their study of music within the first two years. Why? Are the parents privy to the negative effects this choice will have on their child’s future?

∑ Most parents have little if any knowledge about the POSITIVE BENEFITS OF MUSIC-LEARNING. The compelling research generated over the last two decades has not (for the most part) made its way to the general public. While the music advocacy data is powerfully convincing, it certainly is not common knowledge.

Suffice to say there are many potential music students who, for one reason or another, have inadvertently missed the window-of-opportunity, and therefore they will (most likely) never have the chance to participate in a music ensemble. Unlike teachers of other academic subjects, music educators must recruit (and retain) their students/musicians. With the evolution of everything from extended sports teams to advanced placement classes, the growing list of before, after, and during school time commitments amplifies the importance of choosing which organization/s will become an integral part of the student’s school culture. Such a decision must be approached with the knowledge and awareness of the impact it will have on the creation and nurturing of personal success habits of the individual. What stands to be gained as a result of the investment of time and energy?

WHY MUSIC? WHY BAND? Do parents (and students) understand the “indirect” benefits of music learning? Do we highlight the potent character building disciplines as part of the reason to be involved in band? Shouldn’t we tout the fact there is more to this music making than the intrinsic musical rewards? Unquestionably, MUSIC FOR THE SAKE OF MUSIC is primary, but can we afford to stop there? Many argue we could dilute the value of music education by focusing on the by-product rewards stemming from the group activity perspective; teamwork skills, self-discipline, healthy self-esteem, personal confidence, learning to reach short and long term goals, etc. This is a valid consideration, particularly from the educated/literate musician’s standpoint. We know music itself is the driving force, the ultimate payoff; however does this mean we should ignore the obvious data that quickly gets the attention of the non-musician parent? We cannot “teach young people musical skills” if they aren’t in our rehearsal halls and music classrooms, therefore perhaps we will best serve ALL students by widening the spotlight of known life-advantages enjoyed by musicians. Parents must know there’s far more to band than buying and instrument, taking private lessons, adding music class to the school schedule, and rehearsing for a concert. Being a musician maps the human mind for success; success in all avenues of life. The learned skills needed to excel in music are transferable to every academic subject. Playing a musical instrument creates a multi-dimensional template-of-quality adaptable (and applicable) to every personal and professional challenges.

Through music learning we teach:

∑ An understanding of QUALITY as well as the rewards of QUANTITY.

∑ Behavior based on ETHICS as well as the importance of obeying the RULES.

∑ Respect for AUTHORITY as opposed to fear of DOMINATION.

∑ A working WISDOM as well as a solid transcript of ACHIEVEMENT.

∑ An ongoing development of INNER PEACE as well as a workable plan for personal SECURITY.QUALITY – QUANTITY Our educational system is heavily focused on assessment/testing. We measure the success and/or failure of the learning process through a series of evaluations. Clearly there has to be a scale to review, benchmark, and monitor the teaching process; it’s the way we determine LEARNING. All-too-often the numerical outcome becomes and end within itself and it tells us very little about the pragmatic value of the class material. Shouldn’t we be more concerned how this “subject matter” is relevant? We must ask, “Can the ‘quantitative results’ be integrated into the student’s lives to promote better living, learning, and being?” Music, by nature, triggers both the cognitive and affective mind. Not only does the young artists experience the input of facts and figures, but he/she simultaneously develops an appreciation for art. We don’t make music to get to the end of the musical composition; we make music to make music. The personal reward is not the final evaluation (as in a quantity-driven curriculum), but rather the intrinsic satisfaction generated as a result of MUSIC-MAKING. Music teaches an appreciation for QUALITY as well as an understanding of QUANTITY.ETHICS – RULES For the survival of mankind and the perpetuation of our communal form of living we must have RULES to ensure the welfare of the community members. For the safety of the drivers on our highways, we have speed limit RULES, and if these restrictions are not properly observed a penalty is assigned to the violator. Society protects itself with guardians (law enforcement), spokespersons (attorneys), interpreters (judges, juries) to guarantee we live in harmony while still enjoying freedom-of-choice. Although it is altruistic, it is feasible there could be a society absent of rules if each individual believed, practiced, and lived an agreed code of ethics. In principle, the members of the group/community/BAND would be responsible for his/her behavior as it related to the welfare of the community/BAND; the responsibility for “harmony, balance, and blend” then falls on the shoulders of the individual rather than a policing agent. The choice for “doing what is right” is based on ethical understanding rather than the fear of admonishment. The band culture (by design, by nature) requires each musician to behave in an ETHICAL fashion. While there are certainly rules-and-regulations, the very fundamental structure of program excellence is based on the individual self-discipline contributed to achieve the group’s goals. These are the character values we seek in every leadership role: BAND is shaping the lives of our “leaders of tomorrow” through the ethical habits they establish each day in the rehearsal setting. AUTHORITY – DOMINATION We often muse about “the podium” being one of the last bastions of a unilateral leadership position. Yet we know a social order cannot move forward without efficient and effective decision-making.

Band members quickly learn to focus on the band director’s thoughts, instructions, and suggestions; the welfare/success of the band is (figuratively and literally) in the hands of the band director. Unlike many organizations where a committee reviews every choice, the band world (accustomed to a fast-paced schedule of practices and performances) requires a LEADER/DIRECTOR who will make-the-call and move forward accordingly. Band members do not have time to argue or discuss the band director’s choice/s. Quite the contrary, they have learned to embrace and support the power of the authority-figure and trust the director’s decisions will be in the best interest of the group. Healthy, happy societies are not solely based on the individual opinions of the members, but rather on the mutual understanding of the importance of UNITY and the willingness to make personal sacrifices and contributions (time, effort, energy) to the agreed mission.

The power base of the leader (the authority, the band director) is supported by the cooperative contributions of the followers (the band members). When the “respect for AUTHORITY” overrides the “fear of DOMINATION,” it establishes a positive atmosphere that opens the unlimited possibilities of the group’s synergistic potential; it is virtually unlimited. Domination, by intent, discourages creative thinking. The emphasis is on obedience (often “blind obedience”) that supports the choices of the leader. As opposed to encouraging “creative thinking,” the environment of domination dictates “what to think” rather than “how to think.” It rewards compliance (agreement and conformity) without the consideration for the welfare of the followers. Authority, on the other hand, encourages creative thinking while focusing on the importance of cooperation and the ability of the members to “agree to disagree” while still moving forward to sustain and promote the group’s agenda.

WIDSOM – ACHIEVEMENT Our educational community continues to increase the testing component as an end-all for knowledge comprehension. The subtle implication is, “If it cannot be assessed, it not worthy of academic consideration.” Of what value is all this rigorous data-exchange if it is not applicable to the individual’s life? Now there is research indicating we can only remember and access the information we reinforce in our daily habits. Content (information) without context (an understanding of the benefits) is a dead-end street. The value of learning is not WHAT we know, but WHAT WE CAN DO with what we know. Memorizing a long list of anything for the mere purpose of passing the test is an exercise in memorization, nothing more. Information recall is not the key to MASTERY; being able to see the RELEVANT-VALUE of the information is the key, AND it should be the focal point of the educational process. If we are only going to credit the value of higher test scores, we’re doomed to be a world of facts and figures. Certainly the quantitative aspect of LEARNING is crucial, however should we not be concerned about the qualitative value? Isn’t this the very reason we choose to learn in the first place? Being in the band deals with both achievement (a measurable set of disciplines and guidelines) and wisdom (learning that will support a positive, purposeful lifestyle).

Band is one of the few areas of the school day that supports expression as well as impression. Music learning embraces all forms of cognitive learning and goes a step further by integrating the data into the human soul: EMOTION. Music reinforces the principles and ideals that have a significant and lasting effect on the way we choose to live. It teaches the ability to work with others, nourishes the love of learning, encourages cultural awareness, promotes cooperative flexibility in a communal climate, develops self-discipline, extends understanding, etc. All the while it does have standards and it can be assessed; there ARE testing evaluations that measure ACHIEVEMENT, and there IS solid testimony that evidences the WISDOM gained impacts the welfare of the learner.

Simply put: band makes better human beings and makes human beings better.
INNER PEACE – SECURITY We humans continue along the pathway of SECURING various things to promote personal happiness. Whether it is a new car, a college education, a house, a boat, a job, a title, or any other extrinsic reward; the chase (and the race) for goal attainment is threaded into every aspect of the educational docket. When and where do we come to the point of personal satisfaction, the payoff, the joy of living life, and the very reason we choose to educate ourselves in the first place? Is success measured by what we have or who we are? Are we training students to “focus on high test scores,” or teaching students to “enjoy a life filled with personal satisfaction?” These are serious questions, for they determine the learner’s mind-maps. Is the student connected to the product (the grade at the end of the semester) or the process (the holistic experience of blending intelligence, aesthetics, and emotion)? It’s not about “just knowing the right answers.” It’s about “using the right answers” for what they can yield as a reference to meeting the challenges of daily living. Every individual must determine his/her personal criteria for happiness. Nobody can (nor should) dictate what brings pleasure and joy to the human spirit. Whether dealing with short term goals or long term goals, we often become so goal-driven we ignore or simply don’t recognize the importance of enjoying the journey as we attain our given goals; the very reason for WHY WE EXIST.
Band offers a new paradigm-of-learning. The music IS the reason, it IS the reward, it IS the substance, it IS the payoff. The means and the extremes are one-in-the-same. We do not play music to get to the end of it; we play it to make music. In fact if we are truly “connected to the process” we do not want the music to end, or the rehearsal to stop, or the concert to be finished. We acquire and develop a desire for expressing our inner thoughts and feelings through the music; we become artists and enjoy the highest form of personal satisfaction, CREATIVE EXPRESSION, the fundamental component of self-satisfaction. WHY EDUCATION? As the educational system continues to evolve we often become so focused on the HOW, it is easy to lose sight of the WHY. Let us stand back and take a careful look at the development of the entire school system to gain a clearer perspective of not only WHAT we are doing, but WHY we are doing it. If the objective or purpose is to maximize the learning, we have to be boldly honest about what LEARNING has lasting value and what LEARNING is short-term and only for the sake of the test score.

Are we more interested in producing students who are libraries of “commit-to-memory” information, or are we looking to develop well-adjusted students who are sensitive to those around them and interested in exploring their own human potential? Certainly there is a need for both these avenues of educational focus, however it seems we often sidestep the implementation of the learning in favor of MORE LEARNING. The value of knowledge is measured by the fulfillment it brings to the knower. Is it worthwhile? Is it “worth my while?” We have many high achievers (straight-A students) in our schools who have missed-the-mark in correlating their KNOWLEDGE to personal happiness, social contributions, leadership skills, acceptance of others, desire to communicate with others, and the ability to adapt to all facets of society. Is this the goal? Shouldn’t our curriculum be designed help the students open their hearts and minds to a life of ongoing LEARNING while clearly demonstrating the benefits of critical thinking, integrity, dignity, compassion, honesty, ethics, responsibility, fairness, and creative expression? If there is a shred of reasoning in the above thoughts, then the discourse (WHY BAND? WHY MUSIC?) takes on new meaning.

We often tend to answer these questions from an artistic position:

* Music lifts our spirits.

* Music helps us share our inner thoughts and feelings with a vocabulary beyond the common word.

* Music avails us to emotions we otherwise will suppress or ignore.

* Music is a universal language.

* Music makes life worth living by bringing joy to our soul.
These are all well and good and a resounding “AMEN!” is extended by this author, however it is often difficult to express the importance of music making to someone who has never made music. The only way one can explain music is with music; it is a language unto itself.

If we are to convince non-music makers about the importance of music learning, we may have to step off our podiums and put the recruitment spotlight on the extended human needs and essential human qualities:

*Music has a direct impact on academic achievement.

* Music creates a forum for healthy human exchange.

* Music enhances perceptual-motor skills.

* Music supports the qualities needed to survive and thrive in the modern day society.

Music is NOT a frill subject or a fringe activity, but music-study is a microcosm of society bringing the requisite disciplines of success to the ensemble experience. Music learning for the sake of music; and music learning for the sake of life. What better way to prepare for a successful future?WHY MUSIC? WHY BAND?(FROM THE NON-MUSICIAN POINT OF VIEW)
Who should study music? Who should be in band? Music is a place for everyone. Our traditional music programs have inadvertently promoted a false concept of “music is for the musically talented students.” This elitist view has found its way to more people than we might expect. The study of music actually breaks down societal barriers from race to socioeconomic strata.

Music often “reaches” the students who are struggling with their other academic studies. Advanced brain research continues to verify and confirm all brains are “wired for music.” Eric Jensen, research author on brain-based learning, writes,“Music is part of our biological heritage and is hard-wired into our genes as a survival strategy.” (Jensen, E. 2001, Arts with the Brain in Mind, p.15.) Do parents, administrators, community leaders, and teachers of other disciplines understand (even know) this information? Are we (as music educators) sharing this extraordinary news with our educational partners? Music is NOT for the “chosen few,” but music is for all those who want to pursue this exciting pathway of learning, and shouldn’t that be everyone? Why the study of music if my child isn’t going to be a musician? So many parents (at the point of registering a student for beginning band) do not understand the extended value of learning music. There’s far more to this than investing in an instrument, scheduling lessons, driving to-and-from rehearsals, and/or attending concerts. The discipline of music making is transferable to every learning situation in and outside the academic community.

We have pointed to music students as “the smartest and most responsible students in the school.” We now understand it is really the study of music that puts them in this favorable posture alongside their non-musical counterparts. We must be cautious not to suggest “music makes you smarter,” but we certainly can point to the overall accomplishments of the students of music and find a similar high level of achievement in both academic and non-academic arenas; this is NOT an accident or a coincidence. Arguably no other discipline in school can better prepare the mind and spirit for the challenges of, medical study, law school, classes in engineering, education/teaching, business college, etc. Ultimately, don’t we want MUSIC to be a part of every person’s life? From singing in the church choir to playing in the community band, music should not be relegated to the school environment, but music becomes our trusted friend-of-expression forever.Framing the message for the welfare of the child. What is the most important priority for all parents? THE FUTURE HAPPINESS OF THEIR CHILD! Mothers and fathers around the world dedicate their lives to creating an even better life for their children.

In a highly competitive society they want to see their sons and daughters have every possible advantage in their educational climate, their chosen profession, and their selected community-of-living where, once again, the cycle will repeat itself with-and-for the next generation. The complexity of society’s evolutionary standards (some favorable, some not) puts responsible parents “on alert” 24/7. What is the best use of their child’s time and energy, both in the classroom and outside the classroom? Might I suggest the study of music is a cultural imperative fulfilling all the wants, needs, and wishes of every caring-sharing parent. Instead of being overly cautious about emphasizing the “off the podium” benefits of music learning and music making, we might consider SHOUTING this news to every accountable parent, and to every administrator who seeks a better school environment, and to every student who wants to enjoy a life of happiness and success. This is not to replace or overshadow “music for the sake of music,” but to reach out to all students so they can avail themselves to the rewards of MUSIC. We know we have the most convincing recruitment information available to bring them to our rehearsal rooms: MUSIC CREATES SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE. The “learned outcome” of music study is a certain success blueprint. What parent could say NO once he/she understands the immeasurable value of music study?WHY MUSIC? WHY BAND? It might be more appropriate to ask: WHY NOT MUSIC? WHY NOT BAND? It is evident music education should be experienced by every student. We, as a culture, will be best served if the hearts and minds of our youth are filled with the knowledge and the understanding of MUSIC.

Now that examinations are finally over,it's time u concentrate on band! Our next upcoming performance will be on the Speech Day,and i hope to see u guys looking forward to it and practice hard for the performance..

Hey,

How are all of you doing for your Mid-years? I hope you are doing fine, unlike ur seniors they are like half dead now haha. Will be collecting ur results next wk ya? I'll be seeing your results:D As a band member you all must learn to balance your cca and studies as well, so i hope you all will score well(Applies to those who have studied only haha). Upon this note I would like to take this opportunity to pen down my advises and best wishes to this band.

1) To all the new committee members, you all play an important role in this band. Though your position may not be one of those top 3, but it makes a BIG difference in the band. Imagine how the band would be without the welfare? or without the logistics? or even without the treasurer? Ha! everyone would be starving for food.

2) I really hope to see this band grow stronger both in musically and character wise. Give your support to the current leaders now. Be it the SLs or the top3 or even the committee members, give them the support and respect.

3) There's will be no doubts that at certain times your road will be bumpy:D Don't don't lose hope, I have faith in all of you that you'll do just fine.

4) Every member counts. Treat each other like one big family and care for one another not just yourself. Take initiative in the right way and Make the best out of everything you do, only then you'll be able to do greater things:D

Lastly, what you are today is what you have choosen to be. The leaders and teachers are only there to guide you but the decision is yours to be. There's one thing for sure that I know that Mr Wong and Ms Tan have taught us a lot and it is their teachings that made me who I am today.

Hi Band!

It is my first post here haha, but I just want to share with you a sentence that can describe how each of us have changed through the SYF and HMFD experience.

The sentence is " A person is like a teabag, unless you put it into hot water, you will never know how strong or weak it is. " I thought about the sentence, and I feel it speaks alot about what our band have gone through on the road to SYF. I want to challenge all of you band members to continue on this positive track that the band is moving towards, starting by first teaching your Sec 1s well, not only musically, but discipline-wise! :)

On another note, this Monday will be our last band practice untill the Mid Year Exams, so band members, make sure you focus on the Mid Year Exams now, and try not to think so much about band, because I know if I asked all of you to forget completely about Band, I don't think anyone would be able to do it, but just focus on your Mid Year Exams now yea ?, and we would be able to come back to practice for Awards Day! :)

Hey Band!!
Today will be the day, that you will see a post made by me.

On behalf of the top 3 leaders, I would like to thank you, for the support, Respect, Friendship and the music we have made together as a band. We cant possibly list every single thing that we are grateful for that you have given us.

On this very day, when I become your Ex-DM, I would like to say that working with you people is a very fun, exciting experience for me. It is an experience that cannot be found/gain in other organisation/CCA. Although the leaders will be angry because you people didn't follow instruction (blah...) but at the end of the day, how much the band have improved proved that all the pain we have endured is worthwhile.

Like what the teachers said today during the Passing Out Parade, you (every single one of you) have shown great improvement, both in terms of playing and attitude. Woodwinds, remember the times where Ms Tan didn't want to take you people because you can't play well? But now we can right? We have also gone for SYF! This is the evidence that you have improved, tremendously!! Clap for yourself!! WOOT! Same for the other section!

The road to SYF have been a challenge to all of us. We all had endured and have fulfilled the school Motto of Beyond Frontiers!! To me, Kent Ridge Symphonic Band will always be the best and the Most Hardworking CCA, ever in Kent Ridge! I guess you realise and know it too.

Time passes and now it the time for the next batch of leaders to take over the world right? haha!
I'm sure under this batch of leaders, the band will become stronger and move to a higher level!
New committee, my advice to you is to follow what your seniors have thought you. Some things taught can never be applied like copying answer from textbook. You will need to use logic to find solutions from what have been taught to solve your problems. This applies to your studies also!

No doubt, you will be nervous/scared when you do your job. I started off similarly. Be confident, think/plan before you say anything. Don't be blur. If you are, things will not be easily achieved. You will also need to think about your job constantly, thinking of ways to improve/solve a particular problem that is lingering in your committee/band.

Seniors, your experience and knowledge has act as a catalyst, allowing the band to grow faster. Thanks to your commitment, the band can be who they are now. It is saddening that band is ending right? It may be for some of you. I would like to say that if you still have the passion for Music, join other organisation like West Winds, where your thirst for music making can be quenched.

I think i have said enough. Naggy right? Can't blame me...
I cant bare to leave the band. Hah!
To end off, I wish this band all the best.

Hey band!

We are left with only 2 practices before we step down for our Mid Year Examinations!
So please make full use of this 2 practices!

To the committee members,the Farewelcome Party next Monday will be canceled,so you may stop planning for the games and stuffs,but don't throw them away as we may need it.

The Farewelcome party will most probably be postponed to one of the day during your June holidays after your MYE. We don't want to waste too much of your time for the plannings before your MYE!

So,all of you..Please please please study hard for your Mid Year Examinations okay!!?

Sorry I know I promise to update it everyday for this period of time but I was too busy ytr. yup. Anyway, I do not know whether the SYF on wed is still on or whether tmr's band pract is still on. ok? I'll definitely get in touch with all of you as soon as I know and I'll try to update it here as well, so please don't keep msging me. I can't possibly reply all of you, don't worry about it right now, especially those who are still on MC. We'll arrange things for you, just do your part at home and continue to practise, we might call you down anytime alright? Please at the same time get more rest! Otherwise even if we want to call you down you are not ready. Your health is more important.

For Goodness sake! Please don't anyhow take your own initiative and do things on your own like going to see the doctor earlier without informing us! Call me or the teachers, we'll arrange things for you. And those in school, please listen to instructions, don't go and do extra things!

Do what I have told you to do and take good care of yourselves. By doing so, you have already helped me a lot. ok? Don't give up hope! We'r nearly there!! We'll pull through this TOGETHER. Remember "One Band, One Sound".

Hi,
Have you all been practising and doing your part?? I hope you are.
Please rmb at all times to wash your hands and do your deep breathing everyday in order to keep up your stamina.

Don't stop doing your warm ups, if you do, you'll find it much more difficult to play when you come back for the next band practise. Many are recovering from their ulcers, so this shows that it's not due to HFMD but due to hygiene and heatiness. SO Please Drink Lots and Lots of water!
There's no Band Pract on Monday, but we'll probably have to clean up the band room again.

Lastly, Izar has got a word of encouragement for you! " When you come to the end of the rope, tie a knot and hang on to it." Get what he meant? haha for those whose interpretation skills are lousy, he meant that you have all come a long way to this, so dont give up, hang onto it.

We have not gotten a reply whether the syf could be push to the last day, so meanwhile pray hard! Rest More! Drink more! And Wash ur Hands more often! ok?

Hello my dearest band members:D

Did you follow my instructions? You Better. How are the people at home who are sick? The only way to recover now is to sleep more.
As you all know it's a virus so no matter what, you have to let the process run thru and sleeping will allow your body to recover faster.
For the rest of the band members, you are not sick so better take gd care of yourself. I can't afford to let any more members catch this virus. Rmb to:

1) Soak your mouthpiece in warm water for like 7sec. (WW please don't do this so often and don't soak until the colour comes off. You may laugh now but there are some kuku ppl who will do that)

2) Do your deep breathing warm ups on : 4/8 in, 4out...30 out (Tempo60)

3) Using the mouthpiece tongue the rhythm of the scores.
Look out for the followings:
Articulations
Dynamics
Rhythm, see if it's in time with the tempo
Amount of air you use
Sing the notes out with expressions
Pitching(Sing along with the online keyboard)
*Percussion follow the instructions of what Yvonne had told you all and use the metronome to help you.
Haha I'm not sure if the keyboard works for all of you. You'll need to know how to transpose haha. Example: Trumpet/ Clarinet (Tuning note C is the keyboard's Bb) Understand?

How's my band members doing at home? I hope you are recovering.
To all Band Members:

"If You Have Any Blister, Ulcers, Redspots on your soles/Hands or have Fever PLEASE Report to the teachers Immediately. It is very serious ok. Please inform them directly, if you cant contact them contact the sch."

Still we'll not give up hope ok? Remember we'r still in the competition until i say it's over. Continue to work hard with whatever we have:D Follow our instructions ok?Oh Ya! Please rmb to:

1) Wash your hands
2) Try to reframe from getting into contact with others
3) Cover your mouth when you cough/ sneeze
4) Don't Talk SO LOUD!! Keep your saliva to yourself ok?

Hey!

I think our only way of communication is thru this haha. Thank God we still have this to communicate haha. Anyway, don't give up! There's still hope! Practise this wk is cancelled which includes tmr's performance. Further notice will be given for next wk's practise. For those who are at home slacking haha jk resting, please do the following:

3 D's

1) Do 30counts deep breathing with mouthpiece.

2) Do tongueing on the rhythm of the scores. For long tones please hold.

3) Drink lots of water! And sleep more. Your body needs rest. Don't make me nag at you.

4) If you are feeling ok. Go see a doctor on Sat/Mon to verify that you are ok and get a verification slip to say you are ok. Inform me of any news.

For those who are still in school do this followings:

Good! I hope you have remembered what i have told you on Friday...

Don't ever do the same old mistake that you always do...

To put it bluntly, you are wasting everyone's time if you do so. Much greater things can be achieve when you dont do the wrong things.

2. Remember to tune your notes Properly!!
Tune you main tuning note first before you tune that note Mr Wong/Ms Tan ask you to tune...
It will be more reliable and accurate!... Trust me, Trust Mr Wong!

We are... 2 weeks away from SYF. JUST that two weeks! we all can make a difference!
Have the positive attitude and always think about one thing, SILVER!! haha

Okay. I shall inform u again what you need to bring to school by this friday, 20/02/09.

1. White Long Slevees (formal)
2. -School long pants (for men)
- School Skirt (for ladies)
3. -Black shoes (formal looking ones that businessman wears)
-Black shoes with heels (formal looking ones for ladies)

yup. thats all you need to bring.
Pls remember to purchase them if you don't have them.
For the long slevees, you can go to Giant. Its cheap and lasting.
As for the shoes, I don't need to tell you lah.

If u are unsure whether if the things that you bring are acceptable, bring it to school and allow the leaders to check. We will give you some time to correct the changes if its wrong.

Oh! btw, can you please tag on the tag board with your real name. Many of you have been using some weird names. It will be easier for the leaders to cater to your doubts personally.
Before I sign off, Please take care of yourself. We cannot afford to lose anyone of you... If you miss a practice, you will miss a chance to correct your mistake and we will be further away from our goal.

Chinese New Year is coming right?
Im sure many of you are looking forward to receiving Ang baos.

However, PLEASE be reminded that your Auditions are coming!
You will need to pass your audition before you can take part in SYF 2009.
Therefore, you will need to work hard during this festive season.
You can choose not to work hard if you think you are good enough.

The leaders advice will be reap what you sow. okay?
The dates of audition will be:

30th Jan (for sec4s and 3s)
2nd Feb (for sec2s and sec 1s)
6th Feb (for those who have failed)

We have told/warned you about this... please be prepared.

This is a reminder to all of you regarding your homework that need to be completed by the next practice (2nd week of school, Monday!)

Memorise Hill Songs from bar 1-108
Practice those parts that either Brenda or I have pointed out during the past few practices

Lastly, please finish all homework given to you by your teachers. We do not want to go for Detention right? Make sure that all of you finish it okay?? I would not want any band members to skip band practice due to detention classes.

Before I go, committee members, there will be a meeting on the 2nd week of school. Date and time will be told to you again.

On the 16Th of December, which is the performance, please report in BAND T-SHIRT & Sch shorts.
Around 5pm, you will have a break. Therefore, change your shorts to Jeans.

WHY!! That's because the attire for our performance will be BAND T-SHIRT & BLUE JEANS!! Bring your jeans on 15th for the leaders to check!!

this is our very first post. therefore, i would like to set the rules and regulation first.

Please write your name upon tagging. Nameless tag will be removed. The purpose of tagboard is to clarify your doubts. No defamation.

Your holiday break starts now right? However, are we ready for the performance? Ask yourself. If you think that its yes, I think you need to focus more in band. We are not very ready for our concert. In case you don't know, we are only performing four songs.

This is because we don't want to put up a bad show for your parents and thus show that we are unable to cope. Therefore, to play safe, we leaders have planned a number of non compulsory practice. However, please come and practice with your section. If you really cant attend those extra practices, please practice harder at home. Its for the sake of our performance. okay??

Lastly, I hope everyone of you have memorise Pomp. Its for our SYF video!! If we cant play the song, what can you expect when we play it while marching?? It is a must for us to March while playing.

The video is your ticket to SYF competition,so the band really need to put in your best effort to memorise that piece. After we take the video, its the end!! No more tough drills and we can focus more on our SYF pieces. I know I am pushing it very hard on you guys. Just bare with the pain you are experiencing now.
